#9 Greatest Show Of All Time?

The X Files has been voted the #9 Greatest Television Show of All Time by Empire Magazine. Every show has it's own page and the X Files page is here and you can look at all the others, starting from 50 here.

Here's what they have to say:

The X-Files
1993-2002

Created by surfing enthusiast Chris Carter, The X-Files proved to be the show that could do anything. It could modulate its tone from Twin Peaks creepy to Texas Chain Saw Massacre terrifying to Three Stooges silly. It had a pair of good-looking, charismatic heroes with deliciously simmering sexual chemistry - plus a rogue's gallery of memorable villains, including the putrid Flukeman, stretchy Eugene Tooms and butt-loving Cigarette Smoking Man. Of course, the long-running 'Myth-Arc' conspiracy plotline would have baffled Einstein and was never properly wrapped up in any case, but with at least one more big-screen outing lined up for Mulder and Scully there's still time to redeem the show that launched a thousand Dark Skies.

Best Episode
Jose Chung's From Outer Space (Season 3, Episode 20) showcases The X-Files' at its playful best. The same alien-abduction investigation is shown from an array of perspectives, sending up the show's own staples to very funny effect.

Did You Know?
The classic horror episode Home was inspired by a tale in Charlie Chaplin's autobiography, about the time some rednecks took the comedian home to meet to their mother - and pulled her out from under a bed.

Jose Chung? Really? It's good, but the best? Not by a long shot.

I think that there are so many wildly varying notions of what the "best" episode is that most large groups of people usually come to a consensus involving either Jose Chung or Clyde Bruckman.

I just love it when people recognize how important XF *is* in the annals of television history.

Actually, it was their brother. Glen Morgan told this story at Paley the other night.

UNDERSTATEMENT OF THE YEAR.

stretchy Eugene Tooms
At first, I thought that said "sketchy," and I wondered if the writer of this article was a Vassar student, because that seems to be most Vassar student's favourite word.

That should have said "students'." And I can't edit my comments. D:

an interesting list... obviously british - which is totally cool... a big part of me feels i'm missing out on a lot of great tv because the US is too... un-british. :)

however, i have a couple of problems...
1) jose chung? as mentioned above... HARDLY the *best* episode... but whatever
2) 24 better than XF???? Um. It's really good... but no. Not even close. Ditto Friends.
3) my friend and I also bristle at listing an unfinished series as "one of the best of all time" - especially if it's fairly young. Listing the Simpsons is fine... 49 years and running, obviously it will in fact go down as one of the best (tho THE best???) but Heroes?? Heroes is great but there's still plenty of time for the creators to screw the pooch on that one (same with Lost and BSG tho to a far lesser extent as they've proven consistent whereas Heroes... Heroes as not).
4. Seriously?? No Doctor Who??? From a british mag???? That's unbelievable... or did I just miss it? missed it! whew.
eta: 5. West Wing????? #4???? WHAT? ;)

I do love the love for the Sheild though! That show is kickass. :)

Thanks for the link!

Me, too. I wish we had more options for British programming here than just BBC America. I love Doctor Who, Spaced, and Life on Mars.

I totally didn't "get" Jose Chung's From Outer Space the first time I watched it. I was like, seriously?! You can do better than these cheap tricks!

March 28 2008, 21:25:44 UTC 4 years ago

That's pretty cool, even though the rest of the top 10 is utter bullshit.
Except for Spaced maybe ;)

I am very happy X-Files made the list but I definitely think it is better than some of the other shows that are higher than it.

And I don't know how they could choose a single favorite episode.

The rest of the list is totally ridiculous, but X-Files and Spaced are right next to each other! Awesome!

I loooove Jose Chung very much (self-parody really doesn't get much better than that hour of television), but it's certainly not the best episode. I'd rank Bad Blood and Clyde Bruckman above it, along with Paper Hearts and Pusher, at least.

HELL YES, BAD BLOOD!

I understand choosing Jose Chung's. It is definitely one of the all time best.

The rest of the sense didn't make much sense to me until I found out it was voted on by fans.
- Buffy, #2? Really? I'm sorry but I just do not see what's so great about Buffy. *waits to get hurled death threats*
